Volunteering with Project Home Indy
Project Home Indy would not exist without our wonderful support network, including those who are willing to share their time and talent with us.
Please look over this list for our most current volunteer opportunities. Whether you have 30 minutes to pitch in, or a year to commit, we have a meaningful way for you to make a difference in the lives of the families we serve.
Once you have identified the volunteer opportunity that is right for you, please take the
time to fill out this form, and return it to PHI. Staff will review your application, and
contact you within a week to talk about getting started.
Because we work with young women and children, it is a program requirement of all
volunteers that we complete a criminal history. We will walk you through this process
after you submit your application.

Micro Volunteering:
What is micro volunteering?
Micro volunteering is a way to help PHI meet a current need without a long term commitment. Often, these volunteer opportunities may only take a few hours, or one afternoon of your time. Some can even be done at home. This list represents our current needs- check back often to see if there is something you might be interested in!
- Help PHI staff with a mailing (3-5 hours)
- Assist PHI in organizing donations (2-4 hours)
- Yard Work throughout the spring and summer (1 Saturday afternoon)
Mentor Moms:
Are you interested in building a supportive relationship with one of our young mothers?
PHI is looking for five moms to mentor our residents. This is a long term commitment, where the mentor mom would be matched with a resident for the duration of their stay at PHI.
Mentor Moms will help guide our residents through motherhood, school, and setting life goals.
Mentor Moms will have training and support from PHI staff.
Mentor Moms will be providing a support base for teenagers who will often have a fragmented or nonexistent support system.
Mentor Moms will make a weekly or biweekly commitment.
Board Membership:
Interested in joining the Board of Directors?
Joining the Board of Directors is a long term commitment, and most directors serve a 3 year term.
As a board member, you are responsible for organization governance, legal oversight, strategic planning and financial sustainability. You will attend monthly meetings, participate on a committee and take an active role in community awareness for PHI.
Becoming a Board Member is a challenging and rewarding way to make an impact in the lives of teenage mothers and their children by ensuring a stable future for our program.
Serve on a Committee:
Do you have a special talent or expertise that you can share with PHI?
Volunteering as a committee member is less time prohibitive than participating as a Board Member. A committee member may join the fundraising committee, the programming committee, a special event committee or a volunteering committee and will work with board members to bolster support for our program.
If you have a specific talent you would like to share with a committee, we would love to have you!
The time commitment will vary, depending on the project.
Young Professionals Group:
Do you have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for our mission? Are you a young, Indianapolis professional who wants to make a difference? Would you like some resume-building experience in the non-profit world?
- This yet-to-be-named group will provide a great way for young professionals who are passionate about our organization to network and build community awareness about the issues surrounding Project Home and our Residents.
- Joining the young professionals group is a great opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, socialize, build your resume and network- all for a great cause!
- If you are interested in helping us start this group, we would love to hear from you!
One Day Service Projects:
Is your group looking for a way to volunteer for a day?
Project Home would love your help with half-day or full-day projects. These might include yard clean-up, spring cleaning, or maintenance.
We would also love to work with you to set up a donation drive with your school, church, or office. Donation drives are a fun way to get involved with PHI, and make a direct impact on our organization.
Workshops:
Do you have a skill that you can share with our residents?
Building life skills is at the bedrock of our program. It?s critical that our residents learn about nutrition, job skills, finances, health care, selfcare, cooking, and parenting in order to prepare for an independent life.
We also know that sometimes, these topics are best received by someone who is not a staff member- a community volunteer, like you, who cares to take the time to share your skills or your talents with our residents.
Workshop presenters may come to PHI once to present, or may come a few times throughout the year.
Childcare:
Would you love spending time with the babies at PHI?
We will need volunteers to help with childcare while the residents work on homework and evening chores each night.
More than just rocking a baby, we hope that you will be able to build a relationship and model appropriate child caring skills for our residents.
Childcare volunteers will likely volunteer weekly for an hour or two at a time.
Tutoring:
Do you enjoy helping others build math, science or reading skills?
All of the residents at Project Home Indy will participate in schoolwhether that is attending high school, going to GED classes, or attending college classes.
Tutoring support will be an integral part of ensuring that residents can juggle the demands of schoolwork with an already challenging role as a mom. Tutors will help residents with homework, special projects, or assignments that they have difficulty with.
Tutors can volunteer for 1-2 hours on a weeknight on a weekly or monthly basis.
